JESSICA HAD JUST sat down at her home computer, her head still swimming from her meeting with the lieutenant earlier in the day. She needed to blow off some steam and decided to play one of her favorite online multiplayer games, something she had little time to do since school began. She typed in her password and watched the character screen load. Just as she clicked on her highest level character, the phone rang.

She glanced at the clock. It was barely after five. She glanced at the receiver, which displayed an unfamiliar local number. "Probably a wrong number." Before the answering machine could pick up, her cell phone rang. "Damn it."

Jessica quickly retrieved her cell from the kitchen counter. Again, it was an unfamiliar local number. "This better be good," she grumbled as she swiped her finger across the front of the phone.

"Hello?"

"Jessica? Hey. This is Victoria. Victoria Davis." A second of shock was quickly replaced in Jessica's mind by a bemused thought. As if I wouldn't recognize that voice.

"Hey. What are you doing? I mean, you don't usually call me. In fact, I don't think you've ever called me." Jessica took a quick breath, trying to prevent herself from turning into a long rambling mess.

"Oh. Sorry. Did I catch you at a bad time?"

"God, no." Jessica closed her eyes. Desperate-sounding much?

"Good," Victoria said. "I wasn't sure if I'd see you in the morning before your meeting, but--"

"Why? What's wrong? Are you not going in to work tomorrow?" Jessica's mind flashed back to a few weeks ago when Victoria seemed to be deliberately avoiding her.

"I'll be there. I just spoke with Mr. Rudolf about the whole mess and wanted to let you know what was going on." "Oh." Jessica walked to her living room and sat down on the couch. "You can trust him. But I called him just to make sure." "Wait. You called him?" Jessica's voice went up an octave in disbelief. "Well, yes," Victoria said. "I mean, when we left, he was already gone. And I didn't want to risk not catching him tomorrow. I wasn't sure when your meeting was and I wanted to make sure that Rudolf knew what happened."

A soft smile warmed Jessica's face. "Thank you."

"I didn't want to overstep my bounds, but I'm happy to help if I can."

"It means a lot. Really. So what did he say?" Jessica asked.

"He was pissed." Victoria laughed. "I haven't heard that man say so many bad words in the whole time I've known him. I'm not sure who he was more pissed at--Watson or the lieutenant. Either way, I don't think you have much to worry about tomorrow."

"Good. Good." Jessica felt an enormous weight being lifted off her entire body. "Did he say he was going to do anything about it?"

"In this instance, he doesn't see a way to not give the parent what he wants. Rudolf's going to move Timmy to Bruce's class. He doesn't want you to have to interact with that man ever again.
